Investment Spotlight: Kondinin Energy Project

The Kondinin Energy Project in Western Australia is a key asset in our Australian Renewable Infrastructure Fund's (ARIF) portfolio. Developed in partnership with Shell, this venture aims to generate clean energy, reduce carbon emissions, and support the local economy in Western Australia.

Project Overview

In 2022, we acquired Kondinin Energy Pty Ltd through a 50/50 joint partnership with Shell Energy. The project is located approximately 245 km east of Perth and will comprise a 370MW hybrid energy system featuring:

  • 230MW of wind power generated by up to 46 turbines,
  • 80MW of solar power, and
  • Up to 60MW / 120 MW of BESS for grid stability and efficiency.

Once operational, the Kondinin Energy Project is projected to generate approximately 500 GWh of electricity annually, helping to offset around 360,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year - equivalent to removing roughly 78,000 cars from Australia’s roads.

Strategic Location and Grid Connection

The Kondinin site is positioned in a strong renewables resource area and close to the Western Power 220kV transmission line, enabling seamless integration into the grid. The electricity produced will flow directly into the pre-existing Kondinin substation and feed into the broader Western Power network.

Construction and Economic Benefits

The project is currently in the feasibility phase, with work underway to assess its technical, environmental, social, and economic impacts. Construction of Stage 1 is anticipated to begin in 2025 and will take up to two years to complete.

The project is expected to:

  • Create 150 construction jobs, with most positions filled by local workers from the Kondinin shire and surrounding regions.
  • Employ a small permanent team for ongoing operations and maintenance once operational.
  • Boost the local economy by generating new employment opportunities and supporting local businesses.

Complementary Wind and Solar Energy

The Kondinin project’s hybrid design ensures energy reliability and efficiency. Wind resource measurements indicate that the prevailing wind comes predominantly from the southeast and is strongest overnight. By combining solar and wind power, the project will deliver a consistent and complementary renewable energy output.

Community Engagement and Benefits

We are committed to building strong relationships with the Kondinin community and broader Western Australian stakeholders. To ensure ongoing dialogue and transparency, we established a Community Consultative Committee (CCC) in late 2022.

The CCC serves to:

  • Advise and consult on the project’s progress and its impact on the region.
  • Facilitate discussions between the project owners, local councils, and community groups.
  • Promote information sharing and address concerns raised by the community.
  • Provide feedback on social, environmental, and economic outcomes.

The Kondinin Wind and Solar Community Fund

As part of our commitment to the local community, the project will introduce a Community Fund offering $100,000 per year in local grants. This fund will support community projects and initiatives that benefit the areas neighbouring the project throughout its 25-year lifespan.

The CCC will oversee the fund’s administration, ensuring transparency and fairness in grant distribution. Local organisations, groups, and initiatives will be eligible to apply for support once the fund is activated.

A Long-Term Commitment to Renewable Energy

The Kondinin Energy Project highlights our dedication to renewable energy innovation, job creation, and meaningful community partnerships. Through this project, we are helping power a cleaner future for Western Australia.

With over two decades of experience investing in renewable energy across Australia, we are proud to play a key role in the country’s transition to a low-carbon future.
